Public Works of Art Project
Dialogues in Public Art by Tom Finkelpearl, By the 1990s, public art had evolved far beyond the lonely monument on an open plaza. Now public artists might design the entire plaza, create an event to alter the social dynamics of an urban environment, or help to reconstruct a neighborhood. Dialogues in Public Art presents a rich blend of interviews with the people who create and experience public art -- from an artist who mounted three bronze sculptures in the South Bronx to the bureaucrat who led the fight to have them removed; from an artist who describes his work as a "cancer" on architecture to a pair of architects who might agree with him; from an artist who formed a coalition to convert twenty-two derelict row houses into an art center/community revitalization project to a young woman who got her life back on track while living in one of the converted houses. The twenty interviews are divided into four parts: Controversies in Public Art, Experiments in Public Art as Architecture and Urban Planning, Dialogues on Dialogue-Based Public Art Projects, and Public Art for Public Health. Tom Finkelpearl's introductory essay provides a concise overview of changing attitudes toward the city as the site of public art.
Designing the World's Best: Public Art by Garrison Roots, -- A ground-breaking survey of the role of art in public places -- A study of the collaboration of many interesting but diverse groups -- Excellent contemporary layout and design -- each entry features a statement from the artist and a brief description of each featured work -- Features the most prominent "money for art" programs in the United States -- Features an introduction by Professor Garrison Roots of the University of Colorado This book explores the collaboration between artist and client in relation to featuring art in a public space. It includes written descriptions and approximately 200 illustrations which identify artists, architects, artworks and their settings. The content focuses on the level of collaboration between artists, architects and the public with attention to the impact their projects have on the communities where they are installed. Public art is unique because it requires several groups, often with different interests, to work collaboratively in seeking inventive design solutions. With the original vision of the artist, along with the collaboration of the architect and community, there is a deeper understanding of the work and a sense of public ownership. Through this process, the finished work has a greater visual and intellectual impact.
